Taking your cooking to the next level can be as simple as buying the right ingredients. Here's how you can cook seasonally this winter.

Looking for new ways to enhance your cooking skills this year? Try working some seasonal ingredients into your recipes. Fruits and vegetables taste so much better when they're in season, as you can really notice the additional flavor and freshness. You should be able to find the best produce at local markets, like the Long Island Farmers Markets.

Cooking has become a favorite pastime of our real estate agents, who were highly inspired by some of the big bright kitchens in these Brooklyn homes for sale. Now we're constantly on the lookout for new recipes that incorporate these delicious wintertime ingredients:

  • Kale
Kale is often considered one of the best wintertime vegetables. It not only thrives in cool weather, but it also has some incredible health benefits including high levels of Vitamin A and antioxidants. Because it can be so easily worked into a stew or casserole, it's a great addition to any wintertime menu. You can also sauté it and enjoy it as a standalone side dish.

  • Bananas
Bananas are harvested all year long, so they're never out of season. Warm up your kitchen with some freshly baked banana bread or throw a banana into a smoothie for some extra Vitamin C. Bananas are also a great source of fiber and antioxidants.

  • Sweet Potatoes
There is a reason sweet potatoes are often served around the holidays; it's because they're most often harvested during the winter. With loads of Vitamin A and beta-Carotene, they're also a healthier alternative to traditional potatoes. Make a delicious sweet potato casserole and top it with some pecans and cinnamon.

  • Grapefruit
January through March is the prime season for grapefruit harvesting in Florida, Arizona, and California, so it's a great time to halve one and add it to your morning breakfast. You can also work it into your favorite evening cocktail recipe. Either way, grapefruit is packed full of Vitamin C and can give your immune system a much-needed boost this winter.

  • Brussels Sprouts
Imagine a warm bowl of freshly roasted brussels sprouts topped with maple glaze... it's one of our favorite wintertime snacks. Brussel sprouts are another fresh winter vegetable, and they make for a group side dish or appetizer.

  • Clementine's
Like grapefruit, clementine's are harvested in winter months across the southern US. They make for such great snacks since they're easy to grab and peel on the go. You can also put them on a salad or add them to a baked dessert.

  • Broccoli
Broccoli is also harvested year-round, but it's often at its best during the winter months. Best of all, it's the easiest vegetable to incorporate into your meal planning. Whether you make it as a standalone side or incorporate it into a casserole or stir-fry, broccoli is not only one of the healthiest ingredients, but it's also the most versatile.

  • Beets
Beets are harvested in warmer climates from November through March, so you can undoubtedly find some fresh ones at your local grocery store. Roasted beets make for a great side dish, but you can easily throw them on a salad as well. They're a great source of iron, potassium, and Vitamin A.

Home-cooked meals are one of the best ways to beat the winter blues. Contact us today for more ideas on what to make in your kitchen this year.
