April
18

It's about time to show off your green thumb and wow the neighborhood with your gardening. Here's how you can get started early.

Our favorite time of year has finally arrived: gardening season. While many people wait around for warm weather before they get out and start preparing their gardens, our real estate agents like to get a head start. We do everything we can at the end of winter to ensure our spring gardens will be a success. We always plan and prepare well before spring, so we can plant our seeds as early as possible and make the most of those warm-weather weekends.

If you're eager to start gardening, here's a quick list of things you can do now to prepare:

  • Replenish Your Supplies
April is the perfect time to head out to your local landscaping store and stock up on all the supplies you need to bring your garden to life. Start by taking an inventory of what you have, and then create a quick shopping list. Fertilizer, plant supports, seeds, tools, and gloves — now is the time to get out and shop so that you're ready to start planning as soon as that last frost lifts. You'll also want to buy any planters, boxes, shepard hooks, or anything else you'll need to showcase your beautiful plants this year. You might even want to check out some of these Queens homes for sale for inspiration on what to add to your garden this year.

  • Organize Your Shed
Once you've gathered some new supplies, take a couple of hours to make sure your shed is nice and organized. Pull out your tools so they're accessible and sharpen them if needed. Prepare your gardening bucket or supply container so you can grab and go when it's time to start planting.

  • Create Your Planting Schedule
Different plants grow at different rates, so you'll need to take an inventory of everything you're planning to plant this year and create a growing schedule. Certain spring flowers like biennials and perennials need more time to grow, so you'll want to start them early. Other plants, like certain vegetables, grow fairly quickly.

  • Trim and Prune
Trimming and pruning during a plant's dormant period actually help to prevent the spread of plant parasites. It also reduces stress on the plant. Start preparing your outdoor space by trimming and pruning the trees and shrubs around your garden. Just look at some of the well-pruned plants in the yards of these Huntington homes for sale.

  • Clear Out Any Debris
Get a head start on your gardening this year by clearing out any leftover weeds, leaves, or debris from the fall. You'll want to make sure your garden is clean and that nothing gets in the way of your plant's growth. Don't just throw the debris away. Use it to start a compost pile, which will really help your garden grow later in the spring.

  • Prepare Your Soil
After you clear out debris, it's time to get your soil ready for planting. You'll want to start by loosening it up by tilling and turning. Then, top it off with a layer of compost and just a bit of water. Let it settle for a day or two, and then add a fresh layer of mulch. Mulch is important because it helps to suppress weed growth. When mulching, add a thin layer and rake it evenly across your garden.

By preparing for the gardening season ahead of time, you'll have the biggest, healthiest garden on the block. Contact us for more tips.
