- Brookhaven State Park - 2500 William Floyd Pkwy, Ridge, NY 11961
A 1,638-acre state park that was once home to the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Brookhaven State Park is a great place to beat the crowds and go for a hike on Long Island. The park is located near numerous Suffolk County homes for sale and offers 25 miles of marked and unmarked trails that meander through oak-pine forests and scattered wetlands. The 3-mile Brookhaven Trail is a popular route, but you can utilize various trails to create a loop hike of virtually any length. Watch for the blossoms of flowering dogwoods and wild geraniums along the way.
- Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail - 93-95 Harbor Rd, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724
The Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail is a 19.5-mile point-to-point trail that offers some of the best scenery on Long Island. Running from north to south, the trail extends all the way from Cold Spring Harbor State Park on the north shore to the Massapequa Preserve on the south shore, passing through more than a dozen villages and towns along the way. Despite its densely populated surroundings, the Nassau-Suffolk Trail traverses almost entirely wooded areas, making it an urban oasis for hikers.
- Hither Hills State Park - 164 Old Montauk Hwy, Montauk, NY 11954
There are countless ways to experience Hither Hills State Park, a beautiful part that encompasses 1,755 acres near the eastern end of Long Island in Suffolk County. In addition to a freshwater lake, 189-site campground, and sandy beaches on both the north and south shores, Hither Hills State Park also offers more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. The trails wind their way through a diverse landscape of woods, wetlands, and meadows, as well as beach hikes through picturesque sand dunes. Many trails also extend into neighboring Hither Woods State Park and Leo Koppelman County Park.
- Nathan Hale Trail - Park Ave, Huntington, NY 11743
You'll get some great views of Huntington and the surrounding areas on the Nathan Hale Trail, a 10-mile pathway near Long Island's north shore. The trail begins near many Huntington homes for sale at the intersection of Park Avenue and Main Street. From there, it heads westward through a mostly urban and suburban landscape at first before turning southward and following the course of the Nassau-Suffolk Trail through wooded terrain. The Nathan Hale Trail is ideal for jogging and dog walking.
- Massapequa Lake Trail - Bethpage Bikeway, Massapequa Park, NY 11762
One of the best hiking trails in Nassau County, the Massapequa Lake Trail follows the shoreline of its namesake lake within the charming 423-acre Massapequa Preserve. The trail is a 6.3-mile one-way stretch that offers some great scenery alongside the lake and creek. It's a popular trail, especially in the summer months and on weekends, but is often quite secluded on a weekday in spring. Parts of the Massapequa Lake Trail run concurrently with the Bethpage Bikeway Trail, which is Long Island's longest paved traffic-free bike pathway at 13.2 miles.
