Summer Curb Appeal
Summer is the ideal time to increase your home's wow factor with curb appeal since flowers are in bloom and plants, trees, and shrubs look lush and green. In just a few steps and without a huge investment of time or money, you can make your front yard and the outside of your home more appealing to yourself, guests, and, when you get ready to sell, to prospective buyers.

Our real estate agents suggest the following summer curb appeal tips:

  • Make needed repairs.
Look at the outside of your home with a critical eye to spot everything that needs to be fixed. From peeling paint on your shutters to a mailbox that's dented or crooked, these flaws will catch your eye. And they matter to prospective buyers because if they think your house hasn't been well cared for on the outside, they may not bother to see its inside.

  • Hide clutter away.
Put away any items that aren't immediately being used, including lawn and garden and sports equipment as well as kids' toys. And no matter how new and generally clean your trash and recycling are, they're never attractive. Stash them around the side of the house, or better yet, install a small corral of fencing to hide them.

  • Bring out the power washer.
Buy or rent a power washer to clean outside areas of your home. You can wash away dirt and grime while substantially improving the appearance of your driveway, walkway, siding, and other outdoor areas.

  • Keep up with landscaping.
Keep your lawn frequently cut, and keep your trees and shrubs pruned so your yard looks neat and well cared for. Taking the time to edge along your driveway, the curb, and around flower beds and trees will add a nice finishing touch.

  • Paint your front door.
Your front door is not only visible from the curb, it's also the main entrance to your home for guests - and prospective buyers when you're selling your home. So make sure it's welcoming and attractive by giving it a fresh coat of paint. You can always stick to a toned-down look, but a vibrant color such as turquoise or sunny yellow could make your front door even more appealing. Either way, you can also hang a seasonal wreath on your door to increase its visual interest.

  • Make your front porch a comfortable destination.
Create an inviting space to sit and relax on your front porch with a few chairs and a table or an outdoor swing. An outdoor rug and pillows will make the spot more cozy, and they're a good way to introduce more color or texture. Finally, install some outdoor lighting or upgrade your current setup so your outdoor area can be used well into the evening.

  • Add color with plants.
Freshen up your yard with some colorful annuals or perennials, and add some topiary box woods or other evergreens around your front door. If you have steps leading to your door, you can also add some blooming plants in containers. Choose blooms that are in contrasting shades to your home so they'll stand out. Don't go overboard, though, and instead stick to plants in just one or two hues.

  • Utilize solar lighting.
Make your walkways and garden areas focal points by adding solar lights. In the case of walkways, this will also make this outside area safer and reduce the chances of someone falling.
