Aviator Charles Lindbergh was a frequent guest at Falaise, one of the few intact homes remaining from Long Island's famed Gold Coast. Hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is $15 per car or $4 per person for walk-ins.

For 34 years, President Theodore Roosevelt and his family made their home at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. Their charming Queen Anne-style house sits amidst 83 acres of dog-friendly woodlands, fields, marshes, and other natural habitats. The nature trail leads to waterfront views at Eel Creek and a beach at Cold Spring Harbor. Along the way, watch for birds and amphibians such as bald eagles, cuckoos, and turtles. Sagamore Hill is open daily from sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset, and there's no admission fee.

When you need a break from the stress of everyday life, head to Massapequa Preserve. Once you're in the serenity of the tree-filled 432-acre area, you'll forget that you're just a few minutes from "civilization." The preserve is the starting point for the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, Nassau County's longest hiking trail, extending 19.6 miles to Cold Spring Harbor State Park. There's also an asphalt path following a stream that's popular with bikers. Whether you're on foot or on wheels, bring Fido and his leash along. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily except Monday when the preserve is open for 24 hours, and admission is free.
- Muttontown Preserve - 1861 Muttontown Rd., Oyster Bay, NY 11545
Muttontown Preserve has long been cited as one of the top nature walks on Long Island. At a sprawling 550 acres, Muttontown is the largest nature preserve in Nassau County. Chelsea Mansion, an early-20th-century residence located on the grounds, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while a colorful story surrounds the ruins of another nearby building. King Zog of Albania once owned the home, although he never took up residence in it, and legend has it that he stashed his fortune in the walls. Muttontown Preserve is open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and there is no admission fee.
- Quogue Wildlife Refuge - 3 Old Country Rd., Quogue, NY 11959
Get a close-up look at Mother Nature's "children" with a visit to Quogue Wildlife Center. The Outdoor Wildlife Complex takes in permanently injured birds and animals that can no longer survive on their own in the wild. Live animals and wildlife exhibits, as well as stunning views of Old Ice Pond, are on display at the Charles Banks Belt Nature Center. Sights along seven miles of walking trails include ecologically rare dwarf pines in the Pine Barrens. Hours are sunrise to sunset daily and admission is free.
