The Heckscher Museum of Art first opened in 1920 and has been expanding their collection ever since. They currently host over 2,300 works of art by European and American artists, with a particular focus on American art around the turn of the 20th century. Whether you're into film, music, or plays, there's always something new to see at The Suffolk. This gorgeous vintage Art Deco theatre hosts movie screenings, concerts, and the occasional live theatre production. The Long Island Museum of Art, History and Carriages is the only Smithsonian-affiliated museum on Long Island. Each of the institution's three focus points has its own building, making this effectively a three-in-one attraction. Walt Whitman is one of America's most celebrated poets, and he happened to be born right here on Long Island. The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center is a museum dedicated to his life and works. One of the three buildings on the premises is the poet's preserved childhood home. Together, this building and the separate interpretive center building house more than a hundred portraits of Whitman, recordings of his voice, and original handwritten letters and manuscripts. The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame celebrates the past, present, and future of Long Island's entertainment industry. Their collection includes memorabilia from more than 120 celebrities with ties to Long Island, such as LL Cool J, Louis Armstrong, and Billy Joel. In addition to the hall itself, this location also occasionally hosts afternoon performances by current-day Long Island musicians. Upcoming shows include bluegrass artist Martha Trachtenberg on May 18th and folk singer Tal Naccarato the next week on May 25th.
