You don't have to go all the way to Manhattan to get a taste of culture in New York. Long Island has plenty of museums, galleries, and theaters to keep you busy for ages. Our real estate agents recommend starting with these five must-see attractions near our Suffolk County homes for sale. We hope to see you there!
- Heckscher Museum of Art - 2 Prime Avenue, Huntington, NY 11743
The Heckscher Museum of Art first opened in 1920 and has been expanding their collection ever since. They currently host over 2,300 works of art by European and American artists, with a particular focus on American art around the turn of the 20th century. Their next special exhibit debuts on June 7th.
- The Suffolk - 118 East Main Street, Riverhead, NY 11901
Whether you're into film, music, or plays, there's always something new to see at The Suffolk. This gorgeous vintage Art Deco theatre hosts movie screenings, concerts, and the occasional live theatre production. They also offer desserts, charcuterie boards, and beer and cocktails to enjoy during each show. Some of the venue's upcoming concerts include The Warped Tour Band on May 23 and That 70's Band's 20th Anniversary Party on May 30th.
- Long Island Museum of Art, History and Carriages – 1200 Route 25A, Stony Brook, NY 11790
The Long Island Museum of Art, History and Carriages is the only Smithsonian-affiliated museum on Long Island. Each of the institution's three focus points has its own building, making this effectively a three-in-one attraction. The art and history museums both feature impressive collections that are worth checking out, but the carriage museum is the real standout. It boasts the largest collection of American horse-drawn vehicles in the world and plays a pivotal role in preserving this unique aspect of our country's history.
- Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center - 246 Old Walt Whitman Road, Huntington Station, NY 11746
Walt Whitman is one of America's most celebrated poets, and he happened to be born right here on Long Island. The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center is a museum dedicated to his life and works. One of the three buildings on the premises is the poet's preserved childhood home. Together, this building and the separate interpretive center building house more than a hundred portraits of Whitman, recordings of his voice, and original handwritten letters and manuscripts. Guided tours of the museum are available, but guests are also free to roam the premises and enjoy the exhibits at their own pace.
- Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame - 97 Main Street, Stony Brook, NY 11790
The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame celebrates the past, present, and future of Long Island's entertainment industry. Their collection includes memorabilia from more than 120 celebrities with ties to Long Island, such as LL Cool J, Louis Armstrong, and Billy Joel. In addition to the hall itself, this location also occasionally hosts afternoon performances by current-day Long Island musicians. Upcoming shows include bluegrass artist Martha Trachtenberg on May 18th and folk singer Tal Naccarato the next week on May 25th.
